The God Shaped Emptiness

Blaise Pascal said, “There is a God-shaped emptiness in the heart of every person, and… It can only be filled by God…”

I agree with the statement as written but not as it is often read. Note: it does not say it can be filled by belief in God. Having seen that vacuum inside myself I can tell you that it cannot be filled by belief or effectively covered over by non-belief. The thing is, that vacuum is not to be filled or covered over. It is an integral part of who and what we are as human beings.

Whether you believe that the vacuum is part of how we were made or how we evolved is irrelevant. What is relevant is that it can be found within. That said, describing this vacuum in words is difficult. Christian mystics speak of the Cloud of Unknowing wherein the soul is oned with God. Buddhists speak of Emptiness as described in the Heart Sutra. Both are apt, if partial, descriptions; both are easy to misread. Either way this is the emptiness from whence we come and the emptiness to which we return. It is the Kingdom that lies within.

I really hope it’s not just a cruel joke the universe and evolution has played on us, that instead there is something unseen beyond this existence that will eventually fill this emptiness. I can’t accept the alternative and I’m not sure if anyone truly & entirely can. The scary part is that whether we accept it or not, the reality of our existence is what it is. I sure hope my beliefs are one day vindicated.
